The mythical water-wolf in Weelzicht Lodge’s coat of arms symbolises the never-ending struggle between the sea and the land. The three golden waves represent the sandy topsoil which make the area surrounding Schuddebeurs so unique within the Zeeland polder countryside.
Weelzicht Lodge is located near the hamlet of Schuddebeurs at the centre of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in Zeeland. The lodge is located just a short distance from the picturesque town of Zierikzee. The island countryside along the route to this idyllic location is enough to put you in a relaxed state of mind before you even arrive. Whether you are travelling via one of the major cities in the Netherlands, from Brabant or from within Zeeland, the route to Weelzicht Estate always leads you past pristine nature reserves and sprawling vistas — all within a 45-minute drive from downtown Rotterdam.
The name of Weelzicht Lodge has a history just as rich as that of its founders. Weelzicht was founded in the eighteenth century by wealthy citizens of nearby Zierikzee. During this period, many country lodges in Schuddebeurs were being expanded into full estates, complete with lanes and ponds. Weelzicht Lodge served as an idyllic retreat from the noise and stench of the city.
All of the historic buildings inside the complex are now listed on the Dutch national heritage registry, with the barn being the main attraction. Renovation work on Weelzicht Lodge began in 2017. All of the heritage-listed building were completely restored in 2018, and the spacious apartments were built inside the barn.
The conversion has restored the lodge to its original purpose: once again, it is a place where visitors can enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside. Noblesse oblige since 1785
