An oasis of green on the Zeeland polder

Sprawling landscapes, vibrant culture and exciting outdoor activities: Schouwen-Duiveland has something for everyone. The hamlet of Schuddebeurs is located at the centre of the island, just a short distance from many interesting local attractions. Weelzicht Lodge: your home for relaxation.

Hike or bike through the countryside

Idyllic Schuddebeurs is a perfect holiday destination all of its own. Not to mention the sprawling polder meadows surrounding Weelzicht Lodge. These are home to unique plant-life and many species of birds and animals. Plus, Weelzicht Lodge is located along an official cycling trail that connects to hundreds of kilometres of trails throughout the island. There is a bicycle rental just a stone’s throw from your apartment.

You and your partner will enjoy the tranquillity of morning on the estate. Lounge on the cosy sofa in your apartment or hop on the bicycle with your travel companions and head out for a refreshing cycling tour. Taste the salt of the sea on your lips.

The history and culture of Zeeland's towns

The seaside town of Zierikzee is just a few minutes’ drive from Weelzicht Lodge. Towns like the historic Veere or the majestic Middelburg are also not far away by car. Enjoy views of the port from one of the many terraces, sample the local cuisine and stroll down the historic streets filled with landmarks.

Museums in Zeeland

Do you really want to discover Zeeland? Visit a museum during your stay! The island of Schouwen-Duiveland is home to no fewer than eight museums. Here, you will find a treasury of artefacts from Zeeland’s colourful past. Visit the extraordinary Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwekerk, a museum devoted to the North Sea flood of 1953, or the Goemanszorg local museum in nearby Dreischor. Each museum tells a unique story.

On the move in the great outdoors

Zeeland’s famous beaches beckon, along with the oysters and mussels which you can fish for along the banks of the Oosterschelde estuary. The rich aquatic life in Lake Grevelingen and the Oosterschelde make these excellent destinations for divers. Do you prefer to stay above the surface? There are plenty of surfing and sailing schools where you can rent equipment or take lessons. You can also enjoy a relaxing afternoon on one of the island’s excellent golf courses.

The origins of the Great Pond

In 1530, St Felix’s flood devastated the coast of Zeeland. Large swaths of Flanders and Zeeland were completely inundated. Near the hamlet of Schuddebeurs, the Zuiddijk (Southern Dike) was breached in two places. Deep pools formed at each of these points. Today, the Great Pond on the estate is all that remains of one of these pools.
